MT falls in extras in C-USA opener –


CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Home runs bookended Thursday’s Conference USA opener between Middle Tennessee and Charlotte as MT (14-13, 0-1) got on the board first, but the 49ers (15-7, 1-0) ended the game with a longball in the eighth.
» Thursday’s game was Charlotte’s first since March 14, as the 49ers have had to cancel or postpone games in the last two weeks due to the program’s COVID-19 protocols.
» Slap-hitter Summer Burgess led off the game with a home run, the first of her career.
» Later in the inning, Lexi Cushing added a second Blue Raider run with a double that scored Kelci Hill.
» Charlotte answered in the bottom of the first inning with a run of its own with two outs.
» After a scoreless second inning, Kaylee Richetto slugged her first homer of the season, which also brought Hill around to score her second run and give MT a 4-1 lead.
» The 49ers cut into the Blue Raider lead with one run in the third before taking a 5-4 lead in the fourth on a three-run double.
» Hill scored her third run of the afternoon when Cushing delivered a ground ball for her second RBI of the game and knotted the contest at five runs apiece in the fifth inning.
» The teams were unable to score in the sixth and seventh, but in the eighth, Charlotte won game one of the series on a walk-off homer.
» Corrina Dodd got the start for MT, followed by Amber Baldwin and Kailey Ahlstrom in the circle.
» Hill’s 2-for-4 day gives her a team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the year, and the three runs scored is a new career high.
» Cushing secured her fourth career game with two doubles in just two at bats before finishing 2-for-4 at the dish.
