Worcester School Committee to make decision on Fall II sports – MassLive.com

The Worcester School Committee is expected to make a decision on Fall II sports this week.

A special meeting has been called for Thursday evening for the committee to make a decision on Fall II sports.

Fall II follows guidelines established by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and the Department of Secondary Education and happens between the typical winter and spring sports seasons.

The MIAA previously decided Fall II will run from Feb. 22 to April 25. During a recent meeting, MIAA approved cheerleading, football, indoor track and unified basketball for Fall II. Sports approved for Fall I, like cross country, dance, golf, field hockey, soccer, swim and dive and volleyball, may have been moved to Fall II by local districts.

The sports were approved with modifications because of the COVID-19 pandemic. There won’t be a MIAA sponsored post-season tournament for the Fall II season.

In late December, Worcester decided to cancel its winter sports season as coronavirus cases were rising in the city, and across the state. Before that, the fall sports season was also slashed.

Worcester students are slated to start hybrid education next month.

COVID cases have been decreasing in Worcester recently. Last week, officials reported 429 new coronavirus cases over seven days, about half the number of cases reported the week prior.
