Holston Middle School Honors Coach Jared Harrison
Holston Middle School surprised longtime coach and volunteer athletic director Jared Harrison with a special presentation during the school’s final home basketball game on Jan. 11. Holston, Innovation Academy and Blountville Middle School will combine next year at Sullivan Central Middle School.
Dr. Jonathan Fields, the Holston principal, spoke as Harrison was presented a clock representing the countless number of hours Harrison had given to Holston Middle School athletics over the years.
“When someone signs on to serve as a coach for any athletic team, they are committing to many things. And, while we salute and celebrate all of our coaches who give so tirelessly to our athletic programs, we have one among us who has given so much over the years that we must set aside a few minutes to recognize him,” Fields said, adding the recognition had been kept from Harrison because they knew “he would have run out the back door if he had caught any suspicion of such a recognition.”
For over 20 years, Harrison has served the Holston school community as a teacher and coach in softball, baseball, football and basketball. He also served as the school’s unpaid athletic director the past five years. As a middle school coach, he recorded over 600 wins. With those wins came three championships in baseball, nine in football, and 11 conference, nine Area 1 and six state sectional championships in basketball.
“As a school we can never give back all of the time that Coach Harrison has dedicated to the athletes and families over the years. We would like to present him a token of appreciation for all of this time and dedication to the students, athletes and families of Holston Middle School. We hope this will symbolize all of the time you have given to us over the years. Thank you, Coach Harrison,” Fields concluded.
Holston’s boys team closed out the night with a 45-14 win over Chuckey-Doak. The Lady Eagles lost a close one to Chuckey-Doak, 41-36.
